Netflix original movies have been getting more and more recognition by the public eye over the past couple months. Over 45 million Netflix accounts watched the hit film, “Bird Box” after just seven days of being aired.

Bird Box is a Netflix original movie starring Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes and more. The movie is about a mysterious force that influences people to kill themselves once they look at it. This force is everywhere, including the light and wind. All Sandra Bullock’s character, Malorie Hayes, can do is keep her blindfolds on and protect her children from the evil that lingers. The twist is that the people who are mentally ill before the chaos, would not get affected, but encourage others to look at the light and claim that “it’s beautiful,” causing more trouble and massacre. Netflix is very proud of the cast and crew for the success of the film, but have warned   people about recreating its scenes.

Ever since the movie was released on December 13th, 2018, many people, especially younger ones have been recreating the bird boxes best moments by putting a blindfold on and walking around their houses, streets, and towns, otherwise known as the Bird Box Challenge. Some popular youtube influencers have been using this challenge for content and going 24 hours without any vision except in the darkness.

Netflix US addressed the challenge via twitter on January 1st and said, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes”. This tweet was retweeted 50,100 times and received 252,000 likes.

The names “Boy” and “Girl” are the two children of Malorie Hayes. The boy is her own son and the girl is another woman’s daughter who was deceived to look at the light right after birth and run out of a window falling down to her death. Malorie treats them both as her own children, but finds life much more difficult.

The drama/thriller film has caused a huge discussion within the nation. It’s created memes and a challenge that has been taken note of. Overall, the movie is a fantastic thrill that will keep you thinking and anticipating more. I would personally give it 4 out of 5 stars and consider watching it again in the future.
