Mall Of America New Year’s Eve Shooting
On December 31, 2021, The Mall of America was put under lockdown as a shooting broke loose. The Mall is located in Bloomington, Minnesota and is a big tourist spot for anyone who visits the state. With an indoor amusement park, a food court, and multiple stores, the mall is normally full with many shoppers.
The New Years Eve day was as normal as any other day until around 5 pm. The shooter started shooting on the third floor of the mall at the north end. The north end is in between the stores; Nordstrom and Sears. There was only one shot, but two people were shot by the shooter. One in the leg and the other was grazed by the same bullet. The first victim had his injuries treated at the scene and was also sent to Hennepin County Medical Center. The second victim didn’t need to go to a hospital and only had his injury treated at the scene. The mall was under lockdown for an hour until the citizens inside were released.
On January 4, 2022, a man, 18 years old, was arrested as a suspect for the shooting. They also arrested another man, 19 years old, on January 2nd for being a “probable cause of aiding and abetting first degree assault.” (Kare 11 News) He was later released without being charged on January 5, 2022. It is believed that the shooter was working on his own and was not getting help from any other individual. The 18 year old, Kahili Wiley, was charged with two counts of second degree assault from shooting two people. He has not been convicted yet for any of the other counts charged to him.
