Moonfall: Review

By: Logan Williams

Oh boy, I don’t even know where to start with this one. “Moonfall” has got to be one of the dumbest films that I have ever seen in my lifetime. But despite that, I will admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. If you go into the film thinking it’s going to be a balls-to-the-wall absolutely bonkers ride that’s devoid of all realism, it’s a very fun ride. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich and stars Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, as well as Halle Berry. The main premise of this film is that the moon is coming to the destroy the Earth and a motley crew needs to stop it.

Let’s get rolling with the good aspects of this film. On a critical scale, really nothing in this film is that good. Both Patrick Wilson and John Bradley gave a very good performance. I thought that some of the visuals were very pleasant to look at and it also had a pretty fitting soundtrack. If I remove my critique lenses and just look at the film from an entertainment standpoint, It’s one of the best science fiction films I’ve seen in a long while. Throw away all sense of logic and realism and this is just one fun movie. None of it is logical, its down right stupid in multiple scenes. Yet despite that, I really enjoyed this film. The film was also excellently paced. The runtime comes to about 2 hours and 10 minutes but it feels like half an hour. I sat down in the theater and before I knew it 2 hours had passed and I just went on a journey that whizzed by in the blink of an eye. I can’t stress enough how much fun this film was, due to not wanting to spoil anything I sadly won’t be able to touch on everything that makes this such a fun movie. Arguably the best part of this film was the inclusion of a cat who was rightfully named “Fuzz” Aldrin.

I’m gonna keep the negatives as short as possible. I mentioned earlier that this movie has some very nice visuals, well let me tell you that not every visual is good. There’s some scenes that show massive flooding and boy does it look terrible. I’ve seen low-budget youtube videos with better visuals than some of the ones in this film. Another issue is some of the writing. The main character’s (Patrick Wilson) son is a pretty important character but he’s rarely ever on screen. Same goes for certain characters throughout the story. It’s not a super big issue but it is one that happened to stand out to me more than normal. I also happened to notice that there were quite a few scenes that felt like an advertisement for Lexus motor vehicles rather than a scene in the film

At the end of the day, we don’t get many films like this anymore. Just pure science fiction fun is a medium that has seemed to be missing from the media in recent years. And for that I give full praise to Roland Emmerich. I’m giving “Moonfall” a glorious 9/10 purely because it was just so much fun. I highly recommend every goes out and watches it in theaters.
